S1E and Hermes Technologie demonstrate rapid, high-quality manhole renovation using the M-Coating system – a compact and manoeuvrable system ensuring consistent coatings even in restricted sites.

Ageing wastewater infrastructure presents an ongoing challenge for water authorities and contractors across the UK. Over time, groundwater infiltration and environmental exposure can cause manholes to deteriorate, leading to structural damage and the need for timely rehabilitation. During a recent project with Wessex Water, several manholes had developed water infiltration and surface deterioration, requiring refurbishment to restore their structural integrity and extend their service life. In addition to the repair requirements, some of the locations presented restricted access and limited working space, making conventional rehabilitation methods more difficult to implement.
To address these challenges, S1E Ltd worked alongside HERMES Technologie to demonstrate the capabilities of the M-Coating System. Designed as an all-in-one solution for manhole rehabilitation, the system combines surface preparation and mortar coating in a single integrated process.
First, the existing manhole surfaces were prepared using a high-pressure water jetting system, removing loose material and ensuring the substrate was ready for coating. Once prepared, the system mechanically applied a specialised mortar coating, producing a uniform protective layer designed to restore and protect the structure.
The compact design of the equipment also proved advantageous, allowing the team to work efficiently even in areas where space and access were limited.
Over the course of two days, the project team successfully rehabilitated five manholes using the system. The mechanised process enabled the team to complete both surface preparation and coating application efficiently, while delivering a consistent and high-quality finish, whilst minimising access into the manhole.

The demonstration highlighted how compact, mechanised rehabilitation technology can significantly improve both productivity and coating consistency, particularly when compared with traditional manual methods.
The project demonstrated the practical benefits of modern rehabilitation systems in real site conditions, particularly where access is restricted or infrastructure has experienced significant deterioration.
As the exclusive UK partner, S1E Ltd works closely with Hermes Technologie to bring this technology to the UK market, supporting contractors with demonstrations, operator training, and technical guidance.
Terry Ingleby, Director at S1E Ltd, said: “It was a great couple of days on site with the team demonstrating the M-Coating system in real conditions. Completing five manholes in two days shows how efficient the system can be, even in restricted locations.”
By introducing advanced systems such as M-Coating system, S1E aims to help the industry deliver faster, safer, and more reliable rehabilitation of wastewater infrastructure.
